Forum: etree Subject: Know how to use usenet? Have some time on your hands? help the archive ...

As many of you here know, usenet is a vast world of files and there is a group that is very good for live music .shn files:

alt.binaries.music.shn

In that usenet group shows are posted daily from people all over the world. Some are archive.org OK artists, some are not. Some are shows on the archive, some are not.

I just want to put out there that if you have some time on your hands, browse a.b.m.s. for shows and if something is there that isn't on the archive, download it, then upload it to the archive.org servers and import it.

Conversely, if a band you like has a show on a.b.m.s. but they aren't ok for archive.org inclusion (the full list is here: http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-band-showall.php ) e-mail the manager/webmaster/band members with the archive.org pitch explaining what we are about here and ask permission to ask them. there are good instructions on what to do in the FAQ.

Do your part to help contribute to the archive! Try and spread the music!

waste your time and bandwidth downloading .SHN'S and then uploading .SHN'S so that they can be turned into mp3's here. sounds like a great plan to me. hopefully no one's foolish enough to fall for this idea.

Hi George, if you do have something constructive to discuss about the direction of the archive, please post to this thread instead:

Brewster would welcome reasoned input, but not much is being said. Thanks!

Too bad people still think this way.
Tyler: I've been doing a little bit of that in the past, and will be alot more now that I'm more into the archive lately.
Also, might want to put an apb on: http://music.ibiblio.org/pub/multimedia/
still some archive-able stuff not on here yet.
I've been doing my part but I only have 40KiB/s upload bandwidth!

thanks for the help! i am not familiar with that site and couldn't find any forum. Feel free to post the initial thread address there for people to read it and help out.

Hey, be happy with that 40k up. :) Mine is capped at 32 but it actually goes most of the time down at 20 kbps.

keep up the good work!
